The flag of New Caledonia features a dark blue field with a large yellow disc (symbolizing the sun) in the center. Inside the disc is a black and white koru, which is a traditional Maori symbol from New Zealand that represents new life, growth, and vitality. Two narrow red stripes also run diagonally across the top and bottom of the flag. The flag was officially adopted by the government of New Caledonia in 2010, as part of a package of reforms aimed at granting greater autonomy to the French territory. The design was chosen following a public contest in which over 200 proposals were submitted. The flag is intended to represent the diverse cultural heritage and natural beauty of the Pacific island nation, as well as its close ties to France.
